Question: What is the age bracket for membership?
Answer: You must be between the ages of 17 and 80 to join the Vermont State Guard (VSG).

Question: Do I need to shave my beard off or cut my hair? ​
Answer: You are allowed to have facial hair as log as it is kept neat and professional, hair must be kept neat and professional as well.

Question: If I live in a neighboring state on the border can I join the VSG?
Answer: No, one of our requirements is you have to hold Vermont State residency.

Question: Is there a PT (physical training) requirement?
​Answer: No.

Question: Is the Vermont State Guard considered military?
Answer: Yes, the VSG is considered state military but is a non-combat unit. The VSG can be utilized for distribution of supplies durring a natural disaster as well as military security operations on military installations in VT.
Question: I was medically discharged from the armed services. Can I still join?
Answer: Yes, you can! The VSG accepts individuals who were medically disqualified or discharged from military service due to medical conditions or age.

Question: Is the Vermont State Guard armed?
Answer: No, we are not an armed organization. However, we are invited each year to participate in the TAG Match hosted by the Vermont National Guard, which is a competitive shooting event.

Question: Is the Vermont State Guard paid?
Answer: No. The Vermont State Guard is a completely volunteer organization. Members serve without pay.
